The first Sherlock Holmes story published was A Study in Scarlet. “Sherlock Holmes appeared in a total of 60 stories, written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published between 1887 and 1927. The four novels and five volumes of short stories now often appear as "The Complete Sherlock Holmes'" (sherlockian.net). Sherlock Holmes was written into creation over 120 years ago and much like Jack the Ripper, Holmes is still a point of interest for many people. He is still very prevalent in popular culture and has been portrayed by numerous actors throughout the 20th and the 21st century. According to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes was "A "thin wiry, dark" man, "with a high-nosed acute face, penetrating gray eyes, angular shoulders." He "would sit in his receiving room with a face like a Red Indian, and diagnose the people as they came in, before they even opened their mouths. He would tell them details of their past life; and hardly would he ever make a mistake" (sherlockholmesonline.com).
Sherlock Holmes is a beloved character in literature and in film. His wit, intelligence, mischievous nature and ability to get into and out of trouble with such ease makes him a fascinating person to learn about, read about and watch on the big screen and it seems that this won't be changing (fortunately so) for a very long time.
